Dapper Gus Martinez on 1909 Hardley Davidson
As a Villista a few years ago Gus captured me...however, with the revolution over he is now a vision of sartorial splendor riding a 1909 Hardley-Davidson (not Harley) tribute motorized bicycle. This one is made from a 2010 Worksman Industrial bicycle stretched six inches with lots of add-ons and some custom work. It is still a project with a lot of detail and finishing work still needed but even so it catches the spirit of the old bicycles. The horn is original to the period and I have seen this exact type on a 1920 Indian in a picture. Great fun on a budget if you are willing to put the work in yourself and not try to go overboard on authenticity....exact reproductions of 1910 Harleys are being made (but not under the Harley name) but they go for 10 grand. With proper planning and help from friends if you don't have all the skill you can build something like this for less than 1K (if you don't go the stretched frame and the historical look you can build motorized bikes for around 600 bucks...I recommend still using an industrial bike for a base....very strong bikes...if you use a cheap bike you could do it for maybe 300.. Neither this nor the repro Harley's are road legal generally but are great for events such as this and everyone has complemented, even folks with nice motorcycles. Speeds of around 25-30 MPH can be obtained from the Grubee Skyhawk engine, but I am quite happy keeping it at 10-15 mph, that is about as fast as I want to go on bicycle tires.
Trying out the newest Harley, just rolled into Cairo dealership
This beautiful new H-D bike has white-wall tires, which were covered with blue protective stuff. After the dealer wiped off the blue stuff, we tried out the bike and posed for pics.
Snapshots with cheap Canon film camera from garage sale, poor quality scans (sorry). Zamalek (Cairo), Egypt. May 2007.
